This assessment focuses on 4 key crops;
- Vegetables: including sweet corn, field vegetables, peas, potatoes and mushrooms.
- Forage: including corn, pasture, alfalfa and grass.
Combined these crops represent 80% of the irrigated land:
The total irrigated area in the Metro Vancouver ALR is approximately 13, 000 ha. Combined, the selected crops in the 5 selected municipalities comprise over 9,900 ha or 80% of the irrigated ALR land base. Additionally they represent 75% of the irrigation demand of Metro Vancouver’s ALR (BC Moa, 2014; van der Gulik et la., 2013).
Furthermore, a significant portion of the province’s berry and vegetable crops are cultivated in Metro Vancouver (Table below) making the region of particular importance for total production of these crops in British Columbia.
The percentage of crop that is irrigated varies. Eighty five percent of the berry crops are irrigated while 72% of vegetable and 20% of forage crops are under irrigation  .
The assessment concentrates on the 5 municipalities in Metro Vancouver with the largest area in the ALR namely: 1) Delta, 2) Surrey, 3) Langley, 4) Richmond and 5) Pitt Meadows.
