  • Forage: including corn, pasture, alfalfa and grass.

Combined these crops represent 80% of the irrigated land:

Irrigated area of selected major crops in Metro Vancouver's ALR land. Total irrigated area in ALR marked as reference line. Combined selected comprise 75% of Metro Vancouver's irrigated ALR [16,2].

The total irrigated area in the Metro Vancouver ALR is approximately 13, 000 ha. Combined, the selected crops in the 5 selected municipalities comprise over 9,900 ha or 80% of the irrigated ALR land base. Additionally they represent 75% of the irrigation demand of Metro Vancouver’s ALR (BC Moa, 2014; van der Gulik et la., 2013).

Furthermore, a significant portion of the province’s berry and vegetable crops are cultivated in Metro Vancouver (Table below) making the region of particular importance for total production of these crops in British Columbia.

Percent of British Columbia's total cultivated area found in Metro Vancouver of selected crops (StatsCan, 2011).

The percentage of crop that is irrigated varies. Eighty five percent of the berry crops are irrigated while 72% of vegetable and 20% of forage crops are under irrigation [3] .

The assessment concentrates on the 5 municipalities in Metro Vancouver with the largest area in the ALR namely: 1) Delta, 2) Surrey, 3) Langley, 4) Richmond and 5) Pitt Meadows.

The table below indicates the irrigated area in each municipality.
