While the AWDM estimates the irrigation demand for Metro Vancouver’s ALR, there is very little information regarding actual water use. Differentiating between surface water and groundwater use is difficult because, until recently, groundwater use has not been regulated and a groundwater use inventory is required for sustainably managing groundwater. A better understanding of the actual surface and groundwater use would assist in calibrating the water demand and would provide a better insight into the management and consumption of water resources in the region.
Additionally an understanding of the use of domestic water in agriculture would assist in the management of competing demand among municipalities, agriculture and industry. At present it is unclear how much domestic water is used in each community for agricultural activities.
